Frustrated by the dating app struggle? We feel you. That’s why Time Out Los Angeles is launching the Undateables, a series in which we send two eligible singles on a date at some of our favorite local spots in the hopes of striking up a new spark. Following the night out, the daters report back with their candid thoughts on first impressions, chemistry and (of course) the inevitable awkward moments. This time, we sent Ezra and Shane to Guerrilla Tacos in the Arts District—read on to see how it went.

THE DATERS

Ezra is a 40-year-old self-employed brand consultant.

Shane is a 41-year-old jewelry designer.

Why they’re single:

Ezra: She says she spent too much time with the wrong guy and is just starting to date again.

Shane:
He says he separated from his partner this year.

Ideal date:

Ezra: Dinner and drinks—a nice moment to enjoy life with good company.

Shane: Something simple and effortless so that he can get to know someone and focus on them.

THE DATE

First impression

Ezra: “When I saw him, I knew he was going to be interesting, for sure. When I walked in, he got up to hug me and I thought that was just a warm and welcoming thing to do, which helped me to feel a lot more comfortable.”

Shane: “She was cute. We fit each other’s preferences from a visual standpoint. I broke the ice and tried to make fun of the blind date situation so we could get that out of the way and focus on each other.”

Chemistry

Ezra: “He was really worldly and well-traveled. He seemed to know L.A. really well; I’ve lived in L.A. for a really long time so to see it through someone’s eyes who’s excited about it and not jaded was refreshing as well.”

Shane: “We had some really good conversation—I mean, we went to another bar after, she hung out with me. We chatted about all kinds of stuff, the conversation was wonderful.”

Awkward moment

Ezra: “I really can’t think of any. I really felt like he made an effort to make this a good date, and I was really happy about that. We really came bringing our A game and our best.”

Shane:
“Nothing. The conversation was just really good and intense so there was no reason for it to not be a positive, organic experience.”

Afterward

Ezra: “We actually ended up getting drinks after dinner. He asked me for my number and I’d like to see him again. Hopefully we’ll plan a second date.”

Shane: “I asked her if she wanted to have another drink and she was all about it, so I took her to another spot around the block. We exchanged numbers, so I’m gonna go on a second date for sure.”

Verdict [On a scale of five hearts]

Ezra: ♥♥♥♥ “I think everyone wants to be seen and heard, and it was nice that he could see me as a strong, attractive and intelligent woman and told me so.”

Shane: ♥♥♥♥♥ “It was just a wonderful experience. It was unexpectedly better than I could have imagined. And the food was great and the drinks were wonderful. I have no complaints, it was a very positive experience.”

THE DATE SPOT

Our daters went to Guerrilla Tacos.

Ezra: “The restaurant was delicious, everything had a really authentic flavor. The mezcal was good, the octopus taco was amazing and we had a carne asada dish which we both really enjoyed.”

Shane: “The food’s amazing, the neighborhood’s awesome—I would recommend the restaurant to someone if they’re in that area. We had a carne asada plate that was meant to be made into little tacos and it was delicious.”

Maybelline Fit Me foundation was provided to Undateable participants along with concealer, powder and blush. Visit the Fit Me foundation match finder to find the perfect shade for you to wear on your next date.
