The folks at Brooklyn Wort, the annual home-brew competition hosted by Brooklyn Homebrew and Sycamore, believe in the power of a good DIY. On October 12, fellow home-brew enthusiasts will go head-to-head at a craft beer tasting judged by industry professionals and the audience. Snag a $45 ticket to the event at Gowanus's forthcoming Threes Brewing—which is opening its doors exclusively for the event—and sample more than two dozen suds spanning IPAs, saisons, stouts and lagers, and then vote for your favorite.

A panel of master brewers and other experts will judge each of the 30 home brews based on drinkability, aroma, appearance and mouthfeel to crown the overall winner. First place in both the Judge's Choice and People's Choice categories will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to shadow the head brewer of Threes Brewing, but the judges' pick also gets to brew a pilot batch at the brewery and throw a launch party for friends and family.
