In this week’s issue of Time Out New York, we give a warm welcome to outdoor concert season

By Dana Varinsky

The nights are finally starting to get balmy, and fireflies are testing the air, which means one thing: alfresco concerts are almost here. This week, we’re worshipping at the altar of summer shows, getting ready for a jam-packed season of free gigs and full fests. And who better to get us pumped up than Father John Misty? We wax philosophical with the indie rocker before he hits SummerStage August 5 (and even ask him about love dilemmas). And then, of course, tell you everything you need to know about this summer’s concerts, including a Gov Ball itinerary, a calendar of free gigs and a Celebrate Brooklyn! versus SummerStage face off.

This week, we also catch up with writer-director George Miller about Mad Max: Fury Road and weigh in on the postapocalyptic thriller ourselves (spoiler alert: we give it five stars). Plus, we check out the new workouts built for two, round up the best outdoor dance parties, and look into the new popularity of adult summer camp.

Oh, and we answer that burning question: how to tell a musclebear from an otter at Urban Bear Weekend.
