The 2016 TONY* nominees

The 2016 TONY* nominees

We are proud to announce the annual TONY nominations for outstanding achievement in Broadway theater! And by TONY, of course, we mean Time Out New York. The real, actual, official Tony Awards nominations will be announced at 8:30am on Tuesday, May 3. But every year, we pick our own slate of nominees: the Broadway shows and artists that we—theater editor David Cote and deputy theater editor Adam Feldman—would choose to nominate for Tonys if the two of us were the Tony Nominating Committee. Once again: These are not our predictions of who will be nominated, but who we think should be nominated. (In some categories, we wish we could have nominated multiple other contenders—a sign of a strong season.)

So without further trickery or ado, here are our choices. Congratulations to all of this year's TONY nominees!

Surely, you'd give Phillipa Soo a nomination for
Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical??

No sound design? Very disappointed. You could have done better than the actual Tonys on that account.

Agreed with Elaine. Spring Awakening's direction and choreography definitely deserves more recognition.

The lack of Christopher Jackson on this list breaks my heart.

What about Phillipa Soo?  She sounds amazing on the Hamilton soundtrack.

@Christopher B She's even better in the actual show.  Her acting when *SPOILER* Philip dies is heartbreaking.

Phillipa Soo is beyond an over site.  She sounds like a wonder on the Hamilton sound track.

Too bad there's no nod to the eliminated Sound Design category. :(

I thought the new FIDDLER choreography extraordinary.  And I thought Jones and Tyson found some arresting new notes in a familiar score.
