By now you have heard the news about last night’s CBS broadcast of the 70th annual Tony Awards: As was universally expected Hamilton swept the night (11 awards), but didn’t hit the coveted 13-win mark, which would truly have made history. Host James Corden showed off his song-and-dance chops in a whirlwind opening number that managed to be both irreverent and utterly sweet. Sure, it was a cartoonish, Middle America version of what live theater means, but hey, that’s the Tony Awards:
