When you live in the most expensive city in America, it can be hard to stick to a budget. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking for a concert, art exhibit, comedy show or even a date idea, there are plenty of places to good time without paying a dime. Here are the best free parties, cultural events and things to do between now and next Wednesday.

Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade Balloon Inflation
This pre–Turkey Day ritual, held near the American Museum of Natural History, has become almost as crowded as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, but we prefer it to the main event. Why? We prefer to weave through the crowds, walking past the inflation stations to see SongeBob SquarePants at our own pace. Inflation takes place from 3 to 10pm. Arrive later in the evening, when the gigantic characters have taken shape; the crowds are at their peak, so you can also show off the famed New York sidewalk shuffle.Enter at W 79th St at Columbus Ave; Wed 23 at 3pm.

DJ Bengey: Thanksgiving Eve Jamz
After a long campaigning year followed by a shocking election, it might not be easy to relax in time for Thanksgiving Day. Luckily, Union Hall has the night before handled with high energy by the always-upbeat DJ Bengey (who is known to jump on the floor and get down himself). While hip-hop and dance tracks can be expected, we hope some of our favorite Thanksgiving songs, like Sly & the Family Stone’s classic “Thank You,” make the list. 702 Union St, Brooklyn (718-638-4400, unionhallny.com). Wed 23 at 9:30pm.

Clue on a Loop
Whether you cut out of the family Thanksgiving early or skipping the whole affair completely, this screening of the beloved camp classic gives you a chance to get wasted and scream out Mrs. Peacock’s lines to a room full of strangers. Grab a brandy and a board game, and prepare for some delicious twists. Videology, 308 Bedford Ave, Brooklyn (718-782-3468, videologybarandcinema.com). Thu 24 6pm–1am.

13th Annual Day After Thanksgiving Hike
Just because you violated all of your dietary restrictions over yet another Thanksgiving doesn't mean you can't get back in shape immediately. Detox from your holiday of food, TV and family anxiety with an adventure in the lush Blood Root Valley park. Greenbelt Nature Center educators will guide you along on this 2.5-mile hike, with a stop at the historic David LaTourette House, constructed in 1836. Greenbelt Nature Center; Fri 25 at 10am; free with registration.

Grand Holiday Bazaar
One of NYC’s oldest marketplaces goes all out for the holiday season, with a special edition open every Sunday through December 18. Shop amazing gifts from more than 100 local merchants, with photographers, jewelers and furniture designers selling their unique wares. Don’t be a Scrooge and strike through your Christmas list at this market that provides endless holiday cheer by supporting local businesses and by donating 100 percent of profits to four public schools in the neighborhood. 100 W 77th St (grandbazaarnyc.org). Sun 27, Sun 4 10am–5:30pm.
