Late Night NYC Mix #1 by DJ Billy Caldwell

Welcome to our new Late Night NYC Mix Series, where we ask DJs we like to assemble exclusive NYC-themed mixes for us. Our first mix is from longtime New Yorker Billy Caldwell. Hailing from sunny Manchester, Caldwell is a veteran of the UK club scene who was spinning before most people listening to his mix were born. He began his DJ career at one of the most legendary spots ever, the Hacienda, where he learned under the tutelage of residents Mike Pickering and Graham Park. Not long after, he started his own late-night party, Epping Walk After Hours, in two converted apartments with a wall torn down between them (for better dancing, obviously) where people could go after the Hacienda closed its doors at 2am. He has guested on 808 State's Sunset Radio show, cofounded Edinburgh's Sublime Club and played alongside an eclectic all-star list including Afrika Bambaataa, New Order, Doc Martin, Moby, Rabbit in the Moon and Run-D.M.C. He now has a monthly residency at Greenpoint's new Good Room, where he plays Dec 19 alongside Marcellus Pittman and Justin Strauss. In his own words:

“These 90 minutes are a snapshot of artists, remixers and styles that inspire me from my time in NYC. From local disco tracks to labels like Golf Channel to an incredible re-edit of a stone-cold Larry Levan NYC gospel classic! The mix has a Balearic essence as well, which has always been a genre very near to my heart. I've always been of the mentality that it is the job and duty of the DJ to break tracks and push artists they believe in, while keeping things interesting for everyone with a few surprises here and there. It may sound a little old-school, but it's just the musical philosophy I was raised on, from the Hacienda through to the Good Room. Enjoy!”
