Some hotels are defined by their architecture, others by the specific type of scene that they attract. Sofitel New York is a vision in limestone and glass, and has a fantastic on-site venue, Gaby’s Restaurant. But the main thing that defines a stay here, and will probably convince you to return for a second or third time, is the excellent service. The experience is the epitome of luxury without a hint of snobbishness or pretension. It’s wonderful.
From the second you arrive, you’ll feel yourself immediately relaxing as the energetic, helpful and capable staff set about to care of all your needs. Items requested from the front desk arrive at your room in minutes; dinner reservations are cheerfully changed without question. The entire staff carries themselves with welcoming smiles and a certain flair that’s notoriously hard to describe. It has something to do with being French.
A sense of ease comes naturally here, and that’s helped along by the tasteful décor. The bold colors and polished marble in the lobby are eye-catching without being too loud or aggressive. The warm and inviting rooms are full of muted browns and tasteful greys, striking the perfect balance between comfort and sleek design. Many of the rooms offer stunning views of the city, and some include terraces.
Room service is offered 24 hours a day, but a night spent at Gaby’s Restaurant on the first floor makes for a lovely evening. After indulging in the decadent French cuisine from Chef Robert Hohmann—the Escargots ($15) is fabulous and the Chicken picatta ($28) is delicious without being too heavy—have a nightcap at the nearby Art Deco-inspired bar. The dark wood centerpiece is a real stunner and the warm setting is the perfect place to end a busy day.
