Given how geographically divergent and busy both saxophonist Joe Lovano and guitarist Bill Frisell are, the only surprise about Paul Motian's New Trio is that it took so long for Motian to consider pouring new wine from an old bottle. That saxophonist Jerome Sabbagh and guitarist Ben Monder are young enough to have been influenced by Lovano and Frisell, yet strong enough to resist that influence, guarantees a useful tension amid the familiarity.
