Harlem’s beloved soul food institution Melba's is officially set to star on the small screen. According to Deadline, Apple TV+ has announced the development of American Comfort (working title), a scripted comedy series inspired by the remarkable life of restaurateur Melba Wilson.

The project boasts a powerhouse of creative talent. Kenya Barris, the brilliant mind behind black-ish, is set to write and executive produce the series. Joining him in the executive producer chairs are media mogul Oprah Winfrey (via Harpo Entertainment) and Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment. Bringing the central character to life is Oscar and Emmy nominee Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple, Orange Is the New Black), who will star as Melba and serve as an executive producer. While a premiere date and episode count have yet to be announced, the series is already one of the most anticipated upcoming comedies on television.

American Comfort will explore the heart, humor and unparalleled hospitality that transformed Wilson’s eponymous Harlem restaurant from a local treasure into a global culinary landmark. The show will capture how the eatery became deeply embedded into the cultural fabric of its community over the last two decades.

Before building her own empire, Harlem native Melba Wilson cut her teeth working at another legendary neighborhood staple: Sylvia’s, owned by her aunt, Sylvia Woods. Armed with invaluable industry experience and her grandmother's cherished Southern recipes, Wilson opened Melba's nearly 20 years ago.

While her menu boasted mouthwatering staples like fried catfish, Lowcountry collards and smothered pork chops, it was her legendary chicken and waffles that catapulted her to national fame. Crafted with a unique eggnog batter and served alongside strawberry butter and maple syrup, the dish famously beat celebrity chef Bobby Flay on Food Network’s Throwdown! with Bobby Flay.

Today, Melba’s has expanded to high-profile locations like Grand Central Terminal and Newark’s Prudential Center. Despite this massive growth, the Harlem original remains the heart and soul of the brand, recently earning back-to-back James Beard Award semifinalist nominations for Outstanding Hospitality in 2024 and 2025. With American Comfort, audiences worldwide will get a taste of the love, hustle and flavor that made it all happen.
