How else to explain Two Girls, a "Two Girls, One Cup"-inspired play coming to Cherry Lane Theatre this fall? Yes, that "Two Girls, One Cup." And if you don't know what that is, consider yourself blessed and go about your day.
For those of us who were online in 2007, the idea of this particular viral video coming to the stage gives rise to all kinds of questions, none of them rhetorical. But to answer the most pressing: No, it is not a straight-up adaptation of the video. Instead, the production uses verbatim dialogue from the notorious clip to examine questions of sex, disgust and the body.

Written by Eliya Smith and developed with experimental theater ensemble The Goat Exchange and Cherry Lane Theatre, Two Girls will begin previews on October 7, with opening night set for October 18. Chloe Claudel and Mitchell Polonsky direct, and Claudel and Juliana Sass will star.
According to a press release, Two Girls explores “what we look at as we develop our sexualities and why we can’t look away.” Which is considerably more intellectually ambitious than the average browser tab from the mid-2000s.
"Two Girls, One Cup" recently reentered the chat thanks to a viral clip of Keke Palmer discussing it at The Hollywood Reporter roundtable with Quinta Brunson, Lisa Kudrow and other TV stars, proving that this particular piece of internet content had far more lasting consequences than anyone could have imagined 20 years ago.
Also coming to Cherry Lane this fall is the NYC return of School Pictures, written and performed by Milo Cramer and directed by Morgan Green. The show follows NYC students including Faith, who hates reading; Jane, who has lost her flashcards; and Javier, who wonders why studying matters in the face of climate change (or, indeed, in the face of "Two Girls, One Cup"). It tackles parenting, inequality and puberty's cruelty with humor and wit.
The two shows will run separately, with School Pictures at 7pm and Two Girls at 9:30pm. So no, this is not the wildest double feature in the world. Or at least not until you make it one.
