If you've been planning a nonstop getaway from JFK to Houston, Memphis or St. Louis anytime soon, you may want to double-check your itinerary. Delta Air Lines has officially pulled the plug on three domestic routes from New York's busiest international airport, making permanent what was initially called a temporary pause.
The airline confirmed this week that it has ended nonstop service from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Memphis International Airport (MEM) and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). While the announcement is new, travelers may have already noticed the change: Delta stopped operating all three routes on June 7 after rising fuel prices prompted the carrier to suspend service, with plans to bring the flights back in September—but that comeback is no longer happening.
In a statement, Delta said the decision was made "as part of our routine network planning" and that affected customers will be contacted directly to discuss alternative travel arrangements. The airline also apologized for any inconvenience caused by the cancellations.
The good news is that these destinations haven't disappeared from Delta's New York route map altogether. The airline still operates nonstop flights to Houston, Memphis and St. Louis from nearby LaGuardia Airport, so travelers won't necessarily need to switch airlines—just airports. It may be an inconvenience, but it's still a far cry from losing access to the routes entirely.
The cuts also reflect a broader reality of modern airline scheduling. Carriers routinely adjust their networks based on demand, operating costs and aircraft availability, and routes that don't perform as expected can quickly disappear from the schedule. This year's spike in fuel prices appears to have accelerated that process for these three JFK services.
