New York City isn't known for freebies, so when one comes along, you need to sit up and pay attention.
A new scholarship tied to the massive redevelopment of John F. Kennedy International Airport is offering eligible New Yorkers a fully funded master's degree in aviation management. The initiative, launched by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in partnership with CUNY Aviation Center at York College, will cover 100 percent of tuition and fees for a two-year master’s program.
RECOMMENDED: A high-tech feature at JFK’s new terminal will be a free (and fast!) alternative to Global Entry
The program, known as the JFK Redevelopment Opportunity Scholarship, is designed specifically for residents living in communities surrounding the airport. It’s part workforce pipeline and part community investment: as JFK undergoes a multibillion-dollar transformation, officials are looking to train the next generation of aviation professionals right in the neighborhoods closest to the action.
“With the historic redevelopment at JFK, it is critical that the Port Authority continue to invest in talent from the surrounding communities by enabling local students access to opportunities that a new, world-class airport will present,” said Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole in an official statement. “The Port Authority’s unprecedented $50 billion investment in new airport facilities across at JFK, Newark Liberty International Airport and at LaGuardia Airport creates an equally unprecedented opportunity to tap into the talents and the potential of the people of our host communities.”
The program will cover up to two years of tuition and fees for 20 graduate students earning aviation-related master’s degrees at the CUNY Aviation Center at York College in Jamaica, where the curriculum covers "aviation finance, safety management, airport planning, airline operations, global logistics, and strategic marketing," according to the website. The scholarship covers up to two years of study and includes access to paid internships and fellowships with airport operators and the Port Authority itself.
Additionally, another scholarship will fund full tuition and fees for up to four years for 10 high school seniors pursuing aviation or aeronautics bachelor’s degrees at Vaughn College in East Elmhurst.
But of course, there are some strings attached. Applicants need a bachelor’s degree, a minimum 3.0 GPA and strong recommendations, and they must live in one of several ZIP codes in southeast Queens and nearby Nassau County communities. Think of it less as a citywide free-for-all and more as compensation for years of living so close to the airport.
While air travel rebounds and airport infrastructure expands, the aviation industry faces a major employment gap, with millions of jobs expected to open globally in the coming decades. Programs like this aim to ensure those jobs go (at least in part) to local residents.
