Free outdoor concerts are coming to Union Pool this summer

It sounds like hyperbole but really, listen: On any given week Williamsburg bar Union Pool is hosting some of the best concerts in the city. From rock to metal to folk to Rev. Vince's Monday night gospel service, the venue makes the most of its cozy backroom show space with an array of worthwhile tunes.

That'll only get better this summer when the venue's outdoor Summer Thunder series returns for another year of free Saturday afternoon concerts. The music starts on June 2 with sets from Deradoorian and L’Rain, two artists that mix avant-pop and ambient tones with improvisation. Other highlights include psych-rock band Wand, jazz ensemble Sun Ra Arkestra (also playing a free Lincoln Center Out of Doors show this summer), Latin soul singer Joe Bataan, Malian guitarist Mamadou Kelly, avant saxist Jemeel Moondoc and plenty more.

As these are free, you'll want to get there early—and don't forget the sunscreen.
