The wait is finally over for Manhattanites craving a certain sweet treat found only in Brooklyn. Malai, the beloved artisanal ice cream brand celebrated for its vibrant South Asian-inspired flavors, is officially crossing the bridge to open its first permanent Manhattan storefront. On Saturday, May 9, 2026, the doors will swing open at 9 Christopher Street in the heart of the West Village.
While Malai is currently anchored by its flagship in Carroll Gardens, the brand actually found its first fans over a decade ago at Manhattan street fairs like Hester Street Market and Fulton Market. After a successful pop-up last summer, the move to a permanent West Village location was the natural next step in Malai’s journey.
Malai—which translates to "cream of the crop"—has carved out a unique niche by blending traditional Indian spices and ingredients with a modern, small-batch approach. The new shop will feature the signature scoops that built the brand’s cult following, including Mango & Cream, Masala Chai, Rose with Cinnamon Roasted Almonds and Red Chili Chocolate.
In addition to classic scoops, the Manhattan location will boast a soft-serve machine featuring rotating seasonal duos, debuting with Saffron and Pistachio. For those looking to take the experience home, a dedicated freezer will be stocked with pints, ice cream cakes, kulfi pops and the brand's famous "ice cream sandos."
To celebrate the grand opening on May 9, Malai is rolling out the red carpet for the neighborhood. Ice cream enthusiasts can enjoy $3 single scoops all day long. Plus, the first 50 customers to place an order will receive a complimentary insulated bag, perfect for keeping those pints frozen on the way home.
Malai will be open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 10pm and Friday to Saturday from 12pm to 11pm.
