It’s official: Gotham FC is trading the Turnpike for the subway. The two-time and reigning NWSL champions have announced a historic move from New Jersey to New York City. Governor Hochul, Mayor Mamdani, Gotham FC and New York City FC announced yesterday that starting in 2028, the club will set up its permanent home at Etihad Park in Queens.
For years, the team has built an incredible legacy—growing from its early roots as Sky Blue FC into a global powerhouse. While New Jersey will keep the club's pulse alive with a brand-new, 27,000-square-foot elite training facility in Whippany, the matchday magic is officially moving to the World’s Borough.
By packing their bags for Queens, Gotham FC will become co-tenants of NYC’s first-ever soccer-specific stadium alongside New York City FC. Etihad Park is a 25,000-capacity, 100% privately funded, all-electric marvel. When Gotham FC takes the pitch, the stadium will completely transform with customized locker rooms, exclusive merchandise hubs and state-of-the-art LED videoboards that will leave no doubt about who owns the night.
Fans can also look forward to some spectacular stadium features including:
- The Cube: A massive, seven-story LED gateway to welcome the crowd.
- The Supporters Porch: A 9,000-square-foot outdoor gathering space complete with a dedicated tap bar.
- Five Boroughs Food Hall: Serving up local, diverse culinary favorites from across the city.
Perhaps the biggest win of all is for the fans. Located right next to Citi Field (which will host a Gotham FC match before the World Cup final) and Arthur Ashe Stadium, Etihad Park sits just steps from the Mets-Willets Point transit station. Thanks to the 7 train, MTA buses and the LIRR, the move connects the reigning champions to more than 3 million additional people within a 75-minute commute.
As Mayor Zohran Mamdani noted, "Bringing Gotham FC to Queens means that the young girl kicking a ball around Jackson Heights, Jamaica or the South Bronx will be able to take the train and watch some of the best players in the world in her own city. It means more customers for neighborhood restaurants, more visitors filling our hotels and, most importantly, a permanent home for world-class women’s soccer in the greatest city in the world."
