A new kind of movie night is headed to NYC, courtesy of Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League—and it’s a lot more chic than reclining seats and a sticky floor. Metro Cinema officially opens its doors in Chelsea on October 29, re-imagining the very concept of dinner and as a posh, private affair.

Located at 131 Eighth Avenue near 16th Street, Metro Cinema offers guests the chance to book entire suites rather than individual seats. Each of the 20 private screening rooms is fitted with plush recliners, surround-sound and wall-to-wall screens, with capacity for up to 20 guests, creating an experience that feels part screening, part dinner party and part cocktail reception. The concept merges comfort and spectacle, with titles ranging from current blockbusters like Wicked: For Good to a library of classics for a special night with friends or family.
“For over a century, cinema has been experienced in a crowded room surrounded by strangers,” League said in a statement. “We’ve changed that. Sharing dinner, drinks, a great movie and the post-movie conversation with people you love in a spacious, relaxed environment is very special. We’re excited to share this new experience with New York City.”
Before the movie even begins, a turntable and curated vinyl collection sets the evening’s tone. The suite then transforms into a private dining room, with a multi-course menu by Chef Joshua Guarneri (The Breslin, L.A.'s Bar Avalon). Guarneri’s approach is equal parts sophisticated and playful, with seasonal dishes and film-inspired menus that nod to the night’s feature.
Current and upcoming menus are as cinematic as the movies they accompany: the fall culinary roster includes a kampachi crudo and mushroom risotto; a whimsical Wicked: For Good spread features emerald prawns and matcha cheesecake; and an Amélie menu complete with champagne, raspberries and crème brûlée is sure to delight. Seasonal specials, from a Thanksgiving Planes, Trains and Automobiles feast to a Christmas Story duck dinner, keep the lineup fun and festive through the holidays.
But you don't have to book a suite to enjoy Metro. The destination's lobby cocktail lounge, The Bar with No Name, is adorned with vintage film posters, plush seating and serves a daily martini happy hour for anyone looking for a new imbibing spot.
Private suites start at $50 per seat (that includes unlimited popcorn and soda); meals and drinks are additional charges. Reservations can be made for up to four hours, and full menus and film listings are available at metrocinema.com.
