Ah, Roosevelt Island: The quaint haven nestled in the East River that’s famous for its aerial tram, smallpox hospital and pneumatic tube system for disposing of garbage. If none of those aspects of the neighborhood tickle your fancy, then perhaps a run of outdoor film screenings will.
On Wednesday, the Roosevelt Island Summer Movie Series announced its schedule of screenings to be shown at Southpoint Park. The lineup contains a handful of action flicks, along with a family-friendly classic that ought to give parents the opportunity to say, “This is what I watched when I was your age” to their apathetic children.
The series takes place every other week from Friday, June 22, through Friday, August 17, and it kicks off at sunset each night. Admission is free, and each event will also include contests, prizes and food vendors—attendees are encouraged to arrive early to snag a seat.
First on the lineup is a showing of Wonder Woman, followed by the 1992 flick A League of Their Own, which will give viewers the unique opportunity to hear a 40-foot-tall Tom Hanks yell the phrase “pig shit” beneath the Queensboro Bridge. The rest of the lineup includes Star Wars: The Last Jedi; The Fifth Element; Black Panther; and A Wrinkle in Time.
The lineup is pretty balanced and contains films that are also covered in other outdoor screenings around town. But unlike most of those screenings, this one offers pretty stellar views of the Manhattan skyline and the Queensboro Bridge from the waterfront, which is hard to beat.
