This year, in honor of our nation’s birthday, the city of New York has decided to give all of us a truly spectacular present. No, not the annual 4th of July fireworks show. And no, not the sight of people willingly gorging hot dogs in the middle of a crowded boardwalk. If you’re planning to count yourself among the sweaty masses riding out the heat wave in the city this Fourth, you’ll be treated to, wait for it... discounted car rides! A love of discounts, of course, being the one true factor that still unites us as a country.

As part of the De Blasio Administration’s “Know Your Limit” campaign to discourage drunk driving (which, I mean, thank you for thinking I could afford a car in this city) promo codes are being offered now through July 8 on Curb, Lyft and Via. The Curb app connects New Yorkers with more than 13,000 licensed NYC taxis, while Lyft and Via can be used to find registered-for-hire drivers. To redeem the discount, visit the following links for Curb, Lyft and Via.

The special holiday discounts are meant to encourage people to take a car home rather than get behind the wheel of their own theoretical vehicle. According to Department of Transportation data, DWI-related traffic fatalities increase a whopping 55 percent in the six weeks between May 25 and July 6.

“The Fourth of July holiday is a great time to celebrate, but this season also unfortunately sees some of the highest concentrations of alcohol-related traffic crashes of the entire year,” said DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg in a statement. “Good for us, New York City has no shortage of designated drivers—on our subways, our buses as well as in our cabs or for-hire vehicles, which we are grateful will be offering discounted rides all week. Here’s wishing everyone fun and safe celebrations this entire holiday week.”

So wherever you end up celebrating the holiday tomorrow, pocket that extra $10 you’re gonna save on a car ride home and spend it on something truly patriotic. Like, another beer.

Subscribe for just $25 and enjoy an entire year of Time Out New York.
