Bookworms, rejoice: your quiet time is about to go public in the best way possible. Reading Rhythms, the viral “reading party” series that has taken rooftops, bars and parks by storm, is setting up shop at Hudson Yards for a massive summer takeover. Think of it as a silent disco for your brain with books instead of beats.
Kicking off tonight, May 27 from 5:30pm to 8pm—with future dates already set for June 10 and July 8—this free outdoor gathering invites you to bring your favorite book, sprawl out near the Vessel and dive into a good read alongside a few hundred fellow New Yorkers. The main event runs from 6 to 8 pm, featuring live ambient music, silent reading blocks and lightly guided discussions meant to spark connection over shared literary insights. You’ll read. You’ll talk. You’ll actually remember what you read for once!
Founded in 2023 by four friends who missed the slow, focused joy of pre-iPhone reading, Reading Rhythms has evolved from a rooftop hangout into a full-on cultural moment. Past events have drawn waitlists in the hundreds, with attendees raving about the structured quietude, the community vibe and the surprisingly fun feeling of reading en masse. One past guest likened it to a workout class for your attention span—peer pressure but make it bookish.

At Hudson Yards, the format remains simple: Arrive early to grab a chair (or bring a blanket), check in with the hosts and prepare to unplug. First, a half-hour of silent reading. Then, discussion prompts to break the ice. Then another stretch of reading time. You’ll be amazed how fast 60 minutes of reading can fly by when you’re not toggling between tabs or doomscrolling.
No sign-ups for group therapy, no required reading list, no “what chapter are we on?”—just pure bookish bliss, elevated by live music and good company. It’s free, it’s outdoors and yes, it’s BYOB (that "Bring Your Own Book," of course).
New York City may be loud, but this summer, the quietest event might just be the most unforgettable.
