Union Square is about to get something it’s quietly been missing: a proper rooftop bar. And it won't be just any rooftop—this one comes perched 22 stories above the park, set behind the iconic sign of the newly revamped W New York - Union Square.
Called Guardian at the W, the space is the first and only rooftop bar in the immediate Union Square area, arriving as part of the hotel’s $100 million glow-up that was completed in the fall. The new space leans into the classic downtown contrast of rough-around-the-edge while simultaneously dressed up.
The project's designers, AvroKO, the long-standing NYC-based design firm behind projects like Quality Bistro and the recently opened Six Senses London, looked to New York’s art-and-nightlife heyday for inspiration, with a nod to the Warhol era but a cleaner, more refined finish.
Getting up to the bar is part of the experience itself. Guests arrive on the 21st floor, pass through a transitional space, then head up a graffiti-lined stairwell that ends at a gold-toned mural—a polished nod to the city’s street culture. Meanwhile, concrete floors under foot echo the geography of Union Square, nearly 200 feet below.
Once upstairs, the rooftop itself has been built to flex with the seasons. The indoor-outdoor layout has a flexible glass roof and can be climate-controlled, so it won't just be a fleeting summer situation. Inside, the vibe can shift naturally from early evening drinks to late-night energy, while the Manhattan skyline does most of the heavy lifting when it comes to ambiance.
Behind the bar, restaurateur John McDonald (of Mercer Street Hospitality) and chef John Villa are handling the menu, which focuses on elevated classics with a few location-specific twists. Cocktails include the Union Square Spritz and East Side Negroni, alongside staples like Martinis. On the food side, it’s an upscale snack lineup of tuna tartare, lobster rolls, sliders and charcuterie, all designed to keep things social and shareable.
Union Square is one of the busiest crossroads in Manhattan, yet, shockingly, it’s never really had a true rooftop scene. Guardian is stepping into that gap with the kind of all-day-to-evening energy that could make it less of a hotel bar and more of a neighborhood fixture.
Guardian debuts on March 30 and will be open daily from 4pm to 11pm, with reservations available via Resy (and a $75 minimum spend for seated bookings).
