If you've ever looked at a perfectly good birthday cake and thought, "You know what this needs? Twenty-plus hot dogs," congratulations: Oscar Mayer has beaten you to it.
To celebrate the 90th birthday of its gloriously absurd Wienermobile, the company is teaming up with Milk Bar to launch the Oscar Mayer Wiener Cake, a two-tier birthday cake wrapped with more than 20 Oscar Mayer wieners and topped with ketchup-and-mustard-colored confetti sprinkles and a tiny Wienermobile cake topper. The limited-edition creation goes on sale beginning this Friday, July 31, at select Milk Bar locations in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago, while supplies last.
As bizarre as it looks, the cake taps into a very real internet obsession: hot dog cakes have exploded across TikTok over the past year, generating millions of posts and driving Google searches up more than 150 percent, according to the company. Rather than letting social media have all the fun, the company enlisted Milk Bar to create an official version worthy of the Wienermobile's milestone birthday.
"From hometown events and parades to weddings—and even a professional race—the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile has been there for millions of fans' biggest moments, capturing their hearts and cementing its legacy in America's zeitgeist," said Molle Twing, senior brand manager for the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. "After 90 years, the Wienermobile is just as special to Americans as it was in 1936, so it deserves a celebration equally as delightful."
The original Wienermobile debuted in 1936 during the Great Depression, when Carl Mayer, nephew of Oscar Mayer's founder, dreamed up the rolling frankfurter to spread a little joy while promoting the brand. Ninety years later, there are six Wienermobiles traveling the country full time, each driven by a pair of recent college graduates known as "Hotdoggers." Landing one of those jobs is famously competitive—Oscar Mayer says more people have been to space than have driven the Wienermobile.
The anniversary celebration isn't stopping at cake, either. Anyone celebrating their own 90th birthday during July or August can enter for a chance to receive a surprise visit from the Wienermobile, with selected celebrations appearing on the brand's social media channels.
So yes, New York is getting a birthday cake wrapped in hot dogs. Whether you think it's delicious or delightfully unhinged, one thing's for certain: it will probably be the weirdest dessert in the city this weekend.
