One of New York’s most famous dining rooms is getting a major new tenant.
Major Food Group, the hospitality juggernaut behind Carbone, Torrisi, Sadelle’s and The Grill, announced yesterday that it plans to take over the former Tribeca Grill space at 375 Greenwich Street, bringing a brand-new restaurant to the address that iconic downtown address. (The yet-to-be-named project is slated to open next year.)
It’s a corner of Tribeca that’s long synonymous with New York restaurant history: Tribeca Grill, co-founded by Robert De Niro and restaurateur Drew Nieporent, closed earlier this year after a celebrated 35-year run, ending an era for one of the neighborhood’s defining institutions. And now, one of the city’s most influential restaurant groups is stepping in.
According to MFG, the new concept will be led by chef and co-founder Rich Torrisi alongside fellow co-founders Mario Carbone and Jeff Zalaznick. The team describes the restaurant as an American tavern and steakhouse designed specifically for downtown New York, with a focus on classic hospitality and a fresh interpretation of a storied address.
“Mario, Jeff, and I have always been inspired by New York restaurants that become part of people’s lives—places that endure because they have real character, generosity, and soul,” Torrisi said in a statement. “That is what excites me about this project. It is an opportunity to respect the legacy of an extraordinary address while giving people a completely new reason to walk through the door.”
If anyone has experience reviving iconic New York dining rooms, it’s Torrisi and crew. The group previously transformed the former Four Seasons Restaurant space into The Grill and recently revived Rocco’s in NoHo. Torrisi’s eponymous restaurant in the Puck Building has also become one of the city’s toughest reservations to land, earning widespread acclaim and a spot near the top of the New York Times’ restaurant rankings.
The company says it plans to completely reimagine the Greenwich Street space from the ground up while preserving the address's significance. The building remains owned by De Niro and has long been tied to Tribeca’s evolution from an industrial neighborhood to a cultural powerhouse.
“This is the kind of project that comes along once: the right place, the right moment and the right chef,” Zalaznick said. “We are honored to help carry that legacy forward and write the next chapter for one of New York’s great dining rooms.”
For now, details remain under wraps. But if Major Food Group’s track record is any indication, downtown diners should probably prepare for another reservation that becomes nearly impossible to score.
