Primark, the Irish-born budget retailer with a cult following, has finally set its sights on Manhattan, opening its first-ever flagship in the borough next month.
The store is set to debut on May 8 at 150 West 34th Street, directly across from Penn Station, in the thick of Herald Square’s retail chaos. And it’s not going small. The new flagship will span more than 54,000 square feet, marking a massive step in the brand’s U.S. expansion and putting it squarely in competition with some of the city’s busiest fast-fashion heavyweights.
For a brand that built its reputation on rock-bottom prices like $5 tees and full outfits under $50, this Manhattan opening has been a long time coming. While this will be Primark’s 11th store in New York State (and 40th in the U.S.), it’s the first time the retailer has planted its flag in what it calls the “fashion and culture capital” of the country.
And if early signs are anything to go by, demand won’t be an issue. The brand’s NoHo pop-up drew lines down the block and nearby locations are regularly packed. A Herald Square address (arguably one of the highest-foot-traffic corners in the city) only ups the ante.
On opening day, doors open at 10 am with a ribbon cutting, music and giveaways for early arrivals. From there, the party spills into Herald Square Plaza with a full-on block party featuring live DJ sets, free treats, branded pedicab rides and photo ops.
Even as e-commerce continues to dominate, Primark has stayed firmly committed to brick-and-mortar, betting that low prices and high-volume foot traffic still win. Now it’s taking that formula straight into the heart of Midtown.
