If you’re planning to pop the question in New York, forget fancy rooftops or prix fixe dinners. The most romantic spot in the city to propose is free, open to all and looks like it was ripped straight from a storybook: Belvedere Castle in Central Park.

A new study by bridal brand A Diamond Is Forever ranked the top 30 proposal locations in the U.S. and abroad and Belvedere Castle snagged a spot in the national top 10. Perched on Vista Rock, the park’s second-highest point, this 19th-century folly is beloved for its turrets, balconies and sweeping views over Turtle Pond, the Great Lawn and the Manhattan skyline. Translation: instant Instagram gold.

Built in 1869 by architect Calvert Vaux (yes, the same guy behind much of Central Park’s iconic design), the castle was originally intended as a whimsical lookout, hence its Italian name meaning “beautiful view.” Today, it doubles as a visitor center and the ultimate backdrop for “Will you marry me?” moments, no reservation required.

The rankings weren’t just based on vibes. Belvedere earned top marks for being free (a perfect 10/10 on the study’s “cost of entry” scorecard), along with near-perfect ratings for Instagram-ability and safety. More than 45,000 posts tagged #belvederecastle don’t lie—it’s a setting practically begging for a ring selfie.

Other proposal perks: The terraces are romantic but not too crowded, there are restrooms and a gift shop nearby and if your nerves get the better of you, you can always “accidentally” wander into the Ramble to regroup before trying again. Accessibility is a mixed bag (the upper levels require stairs), but the castle grounds and lower views are reachable via paved park paths.

Of course, New York has no shortage of proposal-worthy locales—Grand Central, the Brooklyn Bridge, the Top of the Rock—but Belvedere Castle stands out for its mix of history, charm and zero-dollar entry fee. It’s proof that you don’t need to blow your proposal budget on a pricey setting. Save the cash for the ring (or, let’s be real, the wedding bar tab).

If you’re ready to ask the biggest question of your life, head to the heart of Central Park. Just bring the ring, your person and maybe a bottle of bubbly for afterward. The castle—and its fairytale views—will take care of the rest.
