After days of sweltering heat, flash flood warnings and one mega-soaked commute, we finally have some good news: the seemingly endless stretch of wet weather is about to take a brief break.

Today will be the last gray, drizzly day of this soggy streak, with lingering light rain and spot showers expected to fade by the evening. Temperatures will top out around 72 degrees, making it a noticeably cooler day than the triple-digit heat that baked the city just last week. If you've been wondering whether it's finally safe to leave the house without carrying both sunglasses and a rain jacket, Wednesday is your day.

Forecasters are calling for sunshine, lower humidity and highs around 81 degrees on Wednesday, the nicest weather New York has seen in days. It's the payoff after a chaotic stretch that brought flash flooding, downed trees and torrential rain across the metro area.

On Monday, New York City was under a flash flood warning as storms dumped heavy rain across parts of Brooklyn and Queens, while communities across the Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut dealt with flooded roads, power outages and significant storm damage. Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged residents to limit travel during the worst of the weather and city agencies activated the city's Flash Flood Emergency Plan as rainfall rates reached as much as two to three inches per hour in some locations.

Unfortunately, don't pack away the umbrella just yet. Humidity will begin creeping back on Thursday, along with a 55% to 75% chance of scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms. Highs will climb into the low-to-mid 80s before even warmer conditions arrive Friday, when temperatures could push into the upper 80s with another round of afternoon storms likely. It won't be an all-day washout either day, but expect the familiar summer pattern of sticky mornings followed by pop-up downpours later in the day.

The better news? The weekend is shaping up to improve. While a few lingering showers remain possible early Saturday, conditions are expected to become drier by Saturday evening, with Sunday looking sunnier, less humid and considerably more comfortable.

So yes, the rain is finally letting up—but only briefly. Think of Wednesday as New York's weather intermission before summer's regularly scheduled thunderstorms return. If you've been putting off that picnic, park day or outdoor dinner reservation, tomorrow is the time to cash it in.
