Time Out says

Kaiseki is having a moment in New York, as chefs guide diners through the traditional meal encompassing raw, grilled, simmered, steamed and fried preparations. But much like the omakase counters that pepper the city, the multi-course cuisine generally comes at a cost, as the experience is often formal and refined. Not so at Odo East Village, a hybrid restaurant that bills itself as a "kaiseki izakaya."

Run by Hiroki Odo, whose namesake Michelin-starred restaurant pioneered the cuisine in NYC, Odo East Village presents an affordable option that's still rooted in tradition.

Don't get us wrong: on looks alone, the East Village sibling may appear just as formal, with a 14-seat wooden counter featuring copper touches, centered around chefs who gently grill proteins over live fire and suit-jacketed servers who pour sake into delicate glassware made in Japan. A glimpse of the menu will put your mind (and wallet!) at ease; most plates fly under $20 (compared to the $270 tasting offered at its sister property).

We suggest charting your own kaiseki with an order of bluefin tuna with seaweed jellies, sweetly steamed Hokkaido crab, and bowls of donburi, which rotate, but always come with an ice-cold crown of uni. Pair your meal with something from the hefty sake list or a refreshing kumquat highball.
