Encores!: The Life

The 2022 season of City Center’s invaluable Encores! concert series continues with a fond look back at the 1997 Broadway musical The Life, which looks at Times Square sex workers in the seedy 1980s. The score, by Cy Coleman and Ira Gasman, includes some great numbers (including the Tony Awards banger "My Body"). Billy Porter directs the revival and adapts the original book with the goal of greater authenticity; AC Ciulla is the choreographer. Leading the cast are Alexandra Grey, Ledisi, Antwayn Hopper, Mykal Kilgore, Jelani Alladin, Erika Olson, Ken Robinson and Destan Owens.
