Celebrate the cultures of East Asia—in China, Korea, Taiwan, Mongolia and Japan—through the region's most iconic staple: rice. Held in the Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation at the American Museum of History on Thursday, January 22, "Grains of Change: A Festival of Rice Across East Asia" will bring together New York–based artists, restaurants, cultural organizations and vendors to explore rice not only as a cultural touchstone but also a symbol of sustainability. Attendees will get the chance to snack on rice-based bites from Win Son Bakery, watch a lively mochitsuki (mochi pounding) demonstration, observe Chinese calligraphy in the making, hear from scientists about the connections between rice production and climate change, get into mahjong with a beginners' class with the Green Tile Social Club, sip Korean-style soju cocktails from JUMO and more.
