Time Out says

Here's a Valentine's Day fun fact: Did you know that sailors in the 1800s used to create wooden boxes filled with intricate mosaics created from shells? They'd give these tokens of love and friendship to their wives, mothers, sisters, and friends upon a seafarer’s return from a long voyage. (Note: It's also possible that local women created these works of art, then sailors purchased the creations to give as gifts.)

In the spirit of this maritime tradition, the South Street Seaport Museum will host Valentine Like a Sailor on February 10 and 11 where you can make your own handmade Valentine's Day trinket and learn more about this fascinating history.

It's free to attend; just be sure to register in advance.
