Healthy New York: where to get fit and eat smart in NYC

Healthy New York isn’t some lofty concept: It’s a reality when you eat smart and exercise. Here’s how to do it and still have fun.

You’d think, with all the walking we do, we’d be considered a healthy New York. Though we collectively participate in everything from barre classes to the New York City marathon, there’s still more we can do to get fit. We’ve put together a day designed to kickstart healthy habits, from how you exercise to what you eat. Get moving!

Look the part at New York Running Company

Whether you rocked the New York Marathon or struggle to jog a mile, you can up your game at this specialty store. Test out shoes on the store’s treadmill, where staffers will assess your gait to determine which sneaker best suits your feet and athletic activities. The shop also carries a wide range of apparel from New Balance, Nike, Saucony and other durable brands to outfit the parts of your body that don’t hit the pavement. 212-823-9626, run.com

Break a sweat with Brooklyn Bridge Boot Camp

Lace up those spiffy new kicks and store your old gear in gratis lockers at NYRC—it’s time to kick ass (in the best possible sense). During a one-hour uptown version of this class ($15–$19), trainers lead a group of about 20 through Central Park, running and executing strength-training maneuvers at such spots as Bethesda Fountain. Ignore wide-eyed tourists and focus on your searing butt, arms and thighs instead; one session burns around 800 calories. 646-354-0039, brooklynbridgebootcamp.com

Healthy fast food isn’t as much of an oxymoron as you might think. Stop by this low-key eatery for all-vegan quick bites, including salads, wraps, smoothies and desserts. We’re fans of the portobello pesto sandwich ($9) and the Green Power smoothie, which blends kale, pear, banana, almond butter and soy milk ($7).

Invest in a foolproof game plan at Real Nutrition NYC

Now that you know a place to grab a nourishing snack while you’re out and about, learn how to eat smart on a daily basis. During an hour-long consultation ($225), registered dietitian and Real Nutrition NYC founder Amy Shapiro will help you create a doable food plan and nutrition system that lend themselves to your lifestyle and goals. If you struggle with stocking your fridge and pantry, she’ll come to your pad ($300 for 2hrs), assess your goods—or not-so-goods, as the case may be—and give you directions on how to improve. And if you still can’t trust yourself to make savvy choices, forgo Fresh Direct for once and take a grocery shopping trip with Shapiro ($300 for 2hrs). She won’t slap your hand away if you reach for Doritos or other calorie-laden treats, but a disapproving look should be all the convincing you need. 646-269-8205, realnutritionnyc.com

Treat yourself to some TLC at Queen Jane Day Spa

You’ve had a busy day: Pamper your aching extremities with a body or massage treatment. You can either continue your detox with the seaweed wrap ($125) or work out more entrenched kinks with a deep-tissue massage ($110 for 60mins), which employs essential oils (lavender to promote relaxation or eucalyptus to fight fatigue). 212-684-4548, queenjanedayspa.com
