The best cheap hotels in Paris for a brilliant budget stay

StayCity is a neat, well-equipped apart-hotel within walking distance of Gare De L’Est station that's known across Europe for its well-connected locations, modern facilities and simple design. Most rooms at this particular location are definitely on the smaller side (that’s Paris for you), and the reception itself is tiny – so if you’re planning on spending significant time at the hotel or want somewhere a bit more aesthetic, this is probably not the place for you. But if you’re less about lounging around and are more of a get-up-and-go sort of traveller? You could do a lot worse.

Forget the days when you had to spend a fortune to find a stylish hotel in central Paris. Take Hôtel du Temps, for example. Located right opposite Square Montholon in the heart of the Poissonnière neighbourhood, it offers rates similar to soulless three-star chain hotels – but delivers a completely different experience. The interiors, designed by fashion designer Alix Thomsen and architect-scenographer Laura Léonard, are bold, elegant and timeless, with a playful retro green, vintage furniture and Haussmann-style details.

Less than two minutes from the Colonel Fabien metro station, Generator Paris brings style, substance and affordability to the 10th arrondisement, l'Entrepôt. Just like its inexpensive London sibling, Generator Paris houses simple, but immaculately clean rooms, along with a colourful lounge, a restaurant-bar, and a pool and foosball table for some friendly competition with fellow guests. But unlike London, the Paris location has a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of Montmartre and Le Sacre Coeur.

TRIBE Paris Saint-Ouen taps into the trendy co-living concept with an American-style twist. The idea is to rethink the hotel as a kind of giant shared flat – a laid-back space that’s great for remote working. Already established in Batignolles and La Défense, the TRIBE brand stands out for combining style and modern comfort at relatively affordable prices. The spacious communal areas are designed as extensions of the rooms (which range from 17 to 24 m²), and are ideal for settling in from morning to night with a coffee or a ‘nolo’ cocktail (no or low alcohol). They’ve even become popular with locals from the surrounding area.

Travel far without leaving the city – that’s the quirky concept dreamed up by hotel entrepreneur Joris Bruneel and Franco-Afghan chef Claire Feral-Akram, Babel. This Belleville hotel invites guests to explore the world while staying rooted in the local neighbourhood. Daphné Desjeux’s designs are vibrant and eclectic – a kind of organised chaos that mirrors the spirit of Belleville, with limewashed walls, raffia leaves, velvet banquettes and colourful trinkets. Room prices are kept in check, and thoughtful touches make all the difference – like oriental pastries from La Rose de Tunis served with coffee from Brûlerie de Jourdain.

Hotel Panache is a stylish four-star hotel situated at the corner of Rue Geoffroy-Marie and Rue du Faubourg Montmartre in Paris's 9th arrondissement. Designed by Dorothée Meilichzon, the hotel features 40 rooms with neo-Art Deco interiors, including damask fabrics, gilded wood, patterned carpets, and Parisian metro-style tiling in the bathrooms. Each room showcases curved rattan headboards topped with glowing orbs, creating a unique and elegant atmosphere. Guests are welcomed with fortune cookies. Cute.

Here, 19th-century-style wallpaper sits beautifully alongside colourful contemporary tiling, and most of the décor comes from the personal collection of Vanessa Scoffier – former fashion editor at Marie Claire and the hotel’s owner – including a Guariche coffee table, a Knoll sideboard, and a Platner armchair. Each of the 32 rooms are unique, with bold graphic or geometric wall décor in deep navy or mustard tones, sometimes evoking the style of Mondrian. In many ways, Hôtel Henriette taps into the widely embraced Scandinavian style found across Paris – but with that extra touch of soul that makes you feel right at home.

Another four-star hotel that stands out for its low prices. After opening its first location at Porte de Versailles, the OKKO hotel chain (also present in Toulon, Nice, and Grenoble) chose the Gare de l’Est area for its second Parisian nest. The group’s two guiding principles, sustainability and surprise, translate into establishments that are always environmentally friendly while reinventing themselves with each new opening, whether in design or offerings. If their address on Rue d'Alsace particularly caught our eye, it’s because of its lobby with bubblegum-like volumes and colours, imagined by Milanese designers Studiopepe.

Bargain alert: nestled between Place Saint-Georges and Rue des Martyrs, in a neighbourhood not exactly known for its generosity, the charming little four-star Hôtel Arvor is a real hit without emptying your wallet. An ideal location, tucked away on a quiet street near all the delights of SoPi, it also boasts a lovely little interior courtyard where you can enjoy breakfast or a glass of wine at the end of the day. In the rooms, you’ll find refined, vintage furniture and murals drawn on the walls in a playful, naive style reminiscent of Cocteau’s sketches or Picasso’s doves. (Very) sweet dreams!
