So many bottles, so few livers. Rather than down shots of everything in sight, play it smart and use our guinea pig colleague’s ratings of the more unusual spirits on offer.

Time Out Singapore's production editor Tiffany Chow has never ventured beyond housepours and supermarket aisles for her tipple. Unacceptable. So we trotted her off to La Maison du Whisky to sample a few shots and share her thoughts on them.

[Vodka] Vestal Appellation Pomorze

[Vodka] Vestal Appellation Pomorze

This is a vodka maker that pays attention to where its potatoes grow. Pomorze is spirit distilled from red Asterix potatoes grown near the Baltic Sea.

Tiff says 'I feel like I have the fiery breath of a dragon. I think of cold winter nights – it’s lots more flavourful than a regular vodka.'

[Mezcal] Del Maguey Wild Papalome

[Mezcal] Del Maguey Wild Papalome

The brasher cousin to tequila, Wild Papalome refers to the lush agave variety that San Pedro Teozacoalco natives make the drink with.

Tiff says 'Like a good barbecue, or a good smoked meat with a bit of brine. It's a slow burn. I want to drink this and watch The Godfather. I feel badass.'

[Gin] FAIR Juniper Gin

[Gin] FAIR Juniper Gin

FAIR is commited to sourcing its ingredients sustainably and ethically around the world. Juniper Gin is built with juniper berries from Uzbekistan and spices from Kerala.

Tiff says 'It reminds me of laundry, or flowers blooming. This tastes exotic, like an Arabian desert, but with a liang (cooling) kind of feeling.'

[Rum] Caroni 15 Years

[Rum] Caroni 15 Years

Caroni aficionados are indebted to rum expert, Luca Gargano. The Caroni plantation and distillery closed in 2002, but Gargano found its remaining stock and has bottled and released them for sale.

Tiff says 'Reminds me of a whisky with flavours like caramel and prunes. It hits you sharp.'

[Rum] Clairin Casimir Rum

[Rum] Clairin Casimir Rum

A French-style Agricole rum from Haiti, Clairin takes its cues from the beverage of the same name that the locals drink. Casimir has added citronella and cinnamon for flavour.

Tiff says 'Smells really appetising. It tastes sweet and salty, like corn fritters. This is like food in a drink – I might have this instead of dinner.'

[Whisky] Nikka Coffey Grain

[Whisky] Nikka Coffey Grain

Nikka experiments with distilling in a Coffey still – named after its inventor Aeneas Coffey, not a misspelling of the hot cuppa.

Tiff says 'Very nice smell of caramel. The flavour matches the smell. It's stylish, I dunno why. It's the kind of drink with flavours easy to identify and it feels invigorating.'

[Whisky] Kavalan Ex-Bourbon Oak

[Whisky] Kavalan Ex-Bourbon Oak

Punching well enough to beat the big guys, this one’s aged in barrels previously used to age bourbon.

Tiff says 'Like ice cream on a popsicle. It's really smooth – this has spoilt me. This is what I imagine cool people drink after work when they say, "Let’s go for an after-work drink." I have arrived, people!'

[Whisky] Teeling Single Malt Whiskey (Wine casks)

[Whisky] Teeling Single Malt Whiskey (Wine casks)

Forget what you know about Irish whiskeys. This wine cask bottling is aged in Sherry, Port, Madeira, White Burgundy and Cabernet Sauvignon barrels.

Tiff says 'Subtle and sweet with wine-like flavours. If you like wine, you might like this more than I did.'
