Celebrate an alternative National Day in the August issue

Well, folks, we finally made it. SG50 technically only begins on the ninth this month, but by now most of us must baulk at the sight of those little red dots promoting everything from staycations (because the country wants its citizens to celebrate in town, not out of it) to police cars (because this is Singapore) to bacon (because bacon). Isn’t the theme for this National Day ‘simi sai also SG50’?

We’re gearing up to revel in our own way: by creating ‘alternate’ celebrations. One in which the Parade is more than an empty boast of military might, the Fun Packs actually fun, and the Rally speech more #hardtruths than #brittlepatter (just kidding – we got a comic to write it).

And it won’t be a proper celebration without food. We’re giving props to local cuisine (duh) with a spread of the best zi char joints in town.

If you’re in the mood for something fancier, Marina Bay Sands’ Epicurean Market is a celebrity chef-studded gastronomic affair – and we’ve got the low-down.

’Til SG51, majulah Singapura!
