A few of my colleagues are convinced our office is haunted. They ‘hear’ weird typing noises in the middle of the night, ‘see’ flickering lights, shudder at the sound of footsteps when ‘no one’s around’ (never mind the fact that our neighbours include a KTV bar and a hostel). Even a malfunctioning toilet flush is, to them, evidence of the supernatural. Damn those toyols, messing with our piping.

That said, ghosts and ghouls will run riot all over the city this month. And we’re not talking about another General Elections. Those are far more nightmarish. It’s Halloween again, and there’s a helluva lot of scares – by that we mean parties and spooky events – to be found around the island.

In the spirit of the time-honoured tradition of trick-or-treating, the Time Out Singapore team also played dress-up and decked ourselves in costumes inspired by this year's most anticipated films. As you can see, we really got into character.

We've also got you covered when it comes to a very different sort of event where there are screams aplenty: the WTA Finals. The best women tennis players – shriek-mistress Serena Williams among them – are hitting town to compete. For all the courtside action and fringe activities, visit our Guide to the WTA Finals.

And since we know you'll need to catch a breather away from the thrills, spills and chills that October will bring, we've rounded up the best high tea spots in town where you can kick back and treat yourself to some teatime finery.
