Welcome to Da Bao Diaries, a daily column dedicated to what Time Out Singapore's editors are eating and drinking while Singapore's 'circuit breaker' measures are in place till May 4. Da bao is a Singaporean colloquialism derived from Mandarin that refers to having a meal to go instead of dining in at an establishment.
Even before delivery platforms were a thing, we could always count on pizza delivery for food in a pinch – especially for big groups. But these days, it isn't just the big pizza chains offering fresh pies straight to your door, you can also get artisanal creations from the likes of Extra Virgin Pizza delivered too.
Each pie is handmade to order and there are nine different toppings to choose from. I went with the Roasted Shrooms ($27), which comes covered in béchamel sauce, roasted mushrooms, caramelized onions, mozzarella and pecorino cheese and a drizzle of truffle oil. It ended up being my favourite of the bunch as the sweet onions provide contrast against the salty cheese and the truffle oil amplifies the earthiness of the roasted mushrooms.
I also tried the Pepper Pig ($30) a tomato-based pizza smothered in pepperoni, pork sausage and guanciale, which makes for a saltier and more savoury pie and the more subtle Shellfish Love ($28), a white pizza with clams, squid and prawns with juicy bursts from roasted cherry tomatoes. My dad, who usually only subsists on a diet of local food, happily wiped out all the hot wings ($19), leaving only the veggie sticks behind for the rest of us if you need a testimonial as to why you should also order some sides.
Not a fan of pizza? Extra Virgin Pizza is part of The Lo & Behold Group of restaurants, and most of them are now available on delivery. Check out Odette At Home for a multi-course meal from Asia's best restaurant, get natural wines and elevated bar snack from Le Bon Funk, make your own popiah at home with Po's popiah platters, try signatures like the beer-battered fish and chips from Tanjong Beach Club plus who could forget the thick stacks of burgers from Overeasy.
