Housed in an iconic shipping container structure in the heart of Singapore's art and heritage district, Deck has become a familiar presence in the creative Bras Basah precinct. Since its inception in 2014, the contemporary institution for photography arts has brought together a group of passionate artists, designers, members of the public and like-minded people. Deck's dedication to nurturing photography enthusiasts in Singapore and Southeast Asia has shown throughout the years, spearheading events such as the Singapore International Photography Festival
However, with less-than-stellar news plaguing the arts industry in recent months, the independent art space isn't spared. Deck has announced in a post that the structure on Prinsep Street has reached the end of its lifecycle and will be demolished by March 2021. This leaves the institution with two options: to refit the existing structure or rebuild from ground-up. As Deck believes in claiming a permanent space for independent artists and photographers, to it's calling out for community support to crowdfund a new and permanent building plan with the Save Deck Building Fund. This helps to offset part of the cost for a permanent building with an expanded space that will house more showcases, incubate experimental ideas, nurture new talents and provide more opportunities for mid-career and ground-breaking artists.
