Part of a temporary culinary residency, the revived Beng Hiang is serving both old favourites and new creations

After closing its Jurong East restaurant late last year, Beng Hiang, the 48-year-old Hokkien institution, has found a new home at Shangri-La Singapore's Garden Terrace. The hotel has transformed its indoor-outdoor event space into an 80-seat restaurant for Beng Hiang’s temporary culinary residency.
Founded in 1978 on Murray Street, Beng Hiang later relocated to Amoy Street, where it was a go-to for birthdays, reunions and celebratory meals for decades before moving to Jurong East in 2015. When that outlet closed last year, many assumed it was the end of the road.
In this new chapter, Beng Hiang is making sure to preserve its heritage while introducing it to a new generation of diners. That explains why the recipes remain largely untouched.
Fans will be pleased to know that seven of Beng Hiang's signature dishes have made the journey intact. That includes its dark, richly braised Seafood Hokkien Noodle ($22), cooked in a house-made pork bone and prawn broth, alongside the Superior Crab Meat and Fish Maw Broth (from $20 per person), Slow-Braised Pork Belly with Steamed Buns ($25), Braised Duck with Sea Cucumber ($68) and the restaurant's beloved Crispy Five-Spice Pork Roll and Prawn Ball – better known as hae chor ($18).
There are fresh additions to the menu too, created specially for the Shangri-La residency. New dishes include Tea-Smoked Crispy Chicken ($30), Fuzhou Fish Noodle with Seafood ($20), Slow-Braised Hokkien Duck with Aged Ginger ($40), Fuzhou-style Prawns with Fermented Red Rice Wine ($78), and a DIY Seafood Popiah Set ($58) that's made for sharing.
To complete the experience, Beng Hiang has also launched a Fujian heritage tea programme inspired by the birthplace of Hokkien culture. Expect premium brews including Wuyi Mountain Da Hong Pao, Anxi Tieguanyin and Fuzhou Jasmine Dragon Pearl, available hot ($12 per person) or cold-brewed ($8 per person), designed to accompany leisurely communal meals.
