Joo Chiat Car-Free Day: the full guide to October 3's street takeover

Cars, begone. World Car-Free Day is bringing a series of activities to Singapore that will last till November 30, encouraging everyone to get around on two feet, two wheels and public transport – with the main street takeover happening in Joo Chiat on October 3, 2026. 

What is World Car-Free Day?

First observed in Europe in the late 1990s, World Car-Free Day is an annual initiative that asks cities to temporarily give their streets back to people. The idea is simple: close selected roads to traffic and let people walk, cycle, explore, exercise and hang out in spaces usually dominated by vehicles. 

This year’s local programme puts that idea into practice with Joo Chiat Car-Free Day on October 3, when a stretch of Joo Chiat Road will be closed to traffic for an evening of community activities, heritage experiences, fitness and more.

When is it?

While World Car-Free Day officially falls on September 22, Singapore’s celebrations are running from September to November 30, 2026. The main street party lands on October 3, when a stretch of Joo Chiat Road between Dunman Road and East Coast Road will be closed to traffic from 3.30pm to 9.30pm, making room for a massive weekend festival, community activities, fitness, food, culture and plenty of leisurely wandering.

What’s happening at the Joo Chiat street party?

The main draw this year is Joo Chiat Street Social, a community-led festival by the Katong Joo Chiat Business Association, with more than 80 local merchants from the hood getting involved. Restaurants, cafés, bars, fitness studios, wellness practitioners, art schools, children’s activity providers and pet businesses will take over the road with pop-ups, workshops, tastings, classes, games and other activities. 

Street Social is spread across three zones. ‘Music and Picnic’, near East Coast Road, is the place for live bands and DJs, alfresco dining, local food and heritage tastings, picnic spaces and a beer garden. ‘Wellness and Movement’, along the middle stretch, brings community yoga, Pilates, dance fitness, mobility sessions and other wellness activities onto the road. Then, near Dunman Road, ‘Pets and Heartland Living’ is dedicated to the four-legged crowd, with pet play and agility activities, photo booths, pet-friendly vendors, adoption and animal-welfare initiatives.

On the food and drink front, expect names such as 808 Eating House, Dona Manis, Kings Cart Coffee, Oyster House, and Smokey’s BBQ to bring everything from craft beer and hawker-style bites to banana pie, oysters and Texas-style barbecue. Over in fitness and wellness, Ayu Yoga, Fight Therapy, Jin Pilates and VAURA Pilates will get visitors moving with yoga, Muay Thai padwork, mobility sessions, Pilates and fitness challenges.

For the art-savvy, 3Arts Pottery, Chalk N Pencils, Kintsugi Art Studio and The Makers’ Club are bringing hands-on activities including pottery, crafts, building and creative workshops. And naturally, the pets aren’t being left out either: Dapper Dogs, Pawmrkt, The Barkery and The Gentle Vet will offer everything from grooming and pet treats to health checks, games and paw-print activities.

What else can I expect in the neighbourhood?

Outside of Street Social, the wider Joo Chiat Car-Free Day programme will also feature an Urban Sustainability Bike Tour and a Heritage Dance Fitness session inspired by the rhythms of the Baba Nyonya community. There’ll also be live music at Marine Parade MRT Station from 4pm to 5pm, plus a community party around Joo Chiat Community Club with a Kueh Party, local arts, kids’ activities and live performances.

And there’s also a mobile game to get in on. The Invisible City is an interactive experience available through CrowdTaskSG, sending you around Singapore on foot, by bicycle and public transport to complete location-based challenges. As you play, you’ll gradually uncover a virtual map packed with places, stories and details about neighbourhoods you may think you already know.
