Get free entry to the centre through June, plus over 50 programmes across Kampong Gelam

After a glow-up that’s been years in the making, the Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) is finally reopening its doors. On April 25, 2026, the Kampong Gelam mainstay will return with an all-new storyline: Dari Rantau Ke Rumah (From the Region to Home), looking at how Malay communities here have been shaped by the wider Nusantara, and Singapore’s everyday cultural mix.
Inside, six revamped galleries take you from 19th-century beginnings to future-facing questions of what it means to be Malay today. Expect 279 artefacts, plus stories that go beyond the usual textbook heroes. And also getting overdue spotlight: pioneers like Hajah Maimunah, who helped shape early pilgrimage networks, and Zahrah Za’ba, one of the first Malay women radio announcers, alongside other cultural figures who have helped shape everything from arts to education.
Threaded through it all are “Corridors of Cultural Memories”, intimate spaces between galleries that capture everyday life and living heritage, plus newly commissioned artworks by local Malay artists. Zoom out a little, and the narrative widens: expect stronger representation across Malay sub-ethnic communities – from Javanese and Bugis to Minangkabau, Baweanese and Orang Pulau.
And because a reopening this big deserves more than a polite ribbon-cutting, there’s a nine-day blowout to match. Pesta Pecah Panggung – Transcending Boundaries runs from April 25 to May 3, turning Kampong Gelam into an exciting festival. It’s split into two themed weekends – one exploring the wider Malay world, the other zooming in on what “home” means in Singapore. Expect over 50 programmes, such as cross-border performances, a women-led musical, and even an overnight “slumber party” in MHC with films, karaoke, and a pyjama contest.
Some festival programs require advance registration. Visit www.malayheritage.gov.sg to browse the full schedule and book slots.
Malay Heritage Centre reopens April 25, 2026 with free admission for all visitors through June 28, 2026 (excluding Mondays when the centre is closed). Singaporeans and permanent residents continue to enjoy free admission year-round.
