Bold interiors, rooftop pools and French flair – here's our honest review of Mama Shelter Singapore

Singapore certainly isn't short of stylish hotels, but few have as much personality as Mama Shelter. The cult French lifestyle brand has 20 hotels worldwide, including a new one in Southeast Asia, bringing its signature irreverence, bold interiors and social-first philosophy to Killiney Road – just minutes from Orchard, but somehow feeling worlds away.
Think of Mama Shelter Singapore as the sweet, sassy and sexy spot between a boutique hotel and a luxury stay. It's polished without being pretentious, playful without trying hard, and intimate enough that you'll quickly feel at home. Whether you're planning a romantic weekend, a staycation with your bestie or travelling with older kids, Mama Shelter strikes a refreshing balance that many bigger hotels simply can't.
We checked in to see if Singapore's newest design hotel lives up to the hype.
The moment you arrive, Mama Shelter lets you know this isn't your typical city hotel. Standing proudly outside is an unmistakably British red telephone box – an unexpected landmark that has become one of the hotel's most photographed corners. Just beside it sits an old-school arcade machine, which makes another fun photo stop. It wasn't switched on during our visit, so we're hoping it'll eventually become more than just décor because it'd certainly make waiting for your taxi a little more entertaining.
Inside, the energy shifts immediately. Leopard-print lounge chairs, whimsical animal motifs, glowing neon signs, graphic carpets and hand-painted murals all come together in a maximalist explosion of colour. Even the lifts feel theatrical with disco-esque décor. Yet somehow it never feels gaudy. Instead, it’s like walking into the glamorous clubhouse of someone with exceptionally good taste.
Check-in itself is wonderfully fuss-free. Help yourself to a refreshing welcome drink and collect Mama Shelter stickers alongside racks and shelves displaying quirky branded merchandise – a small touch that immediately reinforces the hotel's playful personality.
Mama Shelter keeps things refreshingly simple with just three room categories. The Mama Room is ideal for solo travellers or couples; the Mama Bunk has a cleverly designed bunk bed for two, while the Mama Terrace comes with a small, private outdoor terrace for some rooms – great for those who'd like a little extra breathing room.
Our first impression of the standard Mama Room? Compact, but thoughtfully designed. The bathroom separates the toilet from the shower. A mirrored sliding partition also divides the bedroom from the bathroom and entrance, creating just enough privacy if one person is getting ready while the other is still asleep.
Then there are the playful details Mama Shelter is famous for. Hanging from the bedside lamps are masks of beloved Looney Tunes characters (we had Bugs and Taz) – delightfully random additions that you'll almost certainly end up putting on for photos. As for the views, ours overlooked neighbouring shophouses and was partially blocked by the building's architectural fins. This isn't the hotel to book for skyline vistas, but honestly, the interiors are the real attraction anyway.
One of our favourite discoveries was the Dyson Supersonic hairdryer complete with all its styling attachments – a useful luxury that's surprisingly rare even in five-star hotels. Add plush bedding, a smart toilet and complimentary movies, and the room comfortably punches above its price point.
Of course, there are a few compromises. Storage is minimal. Instead of a proper wardrobe, there's an exposed clothing rail with hangers, meaning your outfits effectively become part of the room's décor. The sink, coffee station and clothes rail also occupy one continuous stretch, which can feel slightly cramped when you're making your morning cup while navigating open suitcases and hanging clothes. Still, the pantry is well equipped with filtered drinking water, coffee, tea, mugs, cutlery, a minibar and even an umbrella for Singapore's famously unpredictable weather.
Food is very much part of the Mama Shelter experience. Downstairs, Mama Restaurant channels the vibe of a lively French brasserie with bold interiors, live DJs and cocktails that keep the venue buzzing well into the evening. We tried the much-talked-about Mama Happy Meal – a tongue-in-cheek adults-only twist on the childhood classic featuring two mains, free-flow fries, drinks and even a tin of caviar.
Our verdict? The smash beef cheeseburger with black angus patty was beautifully juicy with plenty of caramelisation. Our only complaint is that we wish it was bigger, so that we can savour it a little longer. We also had the chicken nuggets, which were crispy enough but nothing really special.
At the Mama Exclusive price of $39.90 for two, the Mama Happy Meal is a perfectly enjoyable light dinner. But we'd recommend ordering one of the restaurant's larger mains like the foie gras toast ($32), steak frites ($48), beef shank ragu ($32), or the surf and turf platter ($158 for 3) if you're after something more substantial and a better showcase of the kitchen's French influences.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to try breakfast at Mama Restaurant, which is served from Monday to Saturday, and instead had ours at the rooftop restaurant and bar, where breakfast is served every Sunday. Brekkie here proved slightly less convincing. The set breakfast includes one main and one drink. While the rooftop setting is lovely, with its laid-back Mediterranean beach club vibes, the menu feels rather limited, with fewer than eight Western options to choose from, including Eggs Benedict. It's perfectly adequate, but compared to the extensive menu at Mama Restaurant and the creativity found throughout the rest of the hotel, the rooftop breakfast feels like the one area that could benefit from a little more imagination.
The rooftop is undoubtedly one of Mama Shelter's biggest draws. The Mama Sky Pool combines mosaic-tiled pools, vibrant loungers, Mediterranean-inspired styling and lush greenery to create a space that feels remarkably unlike Orchard. With its striped umbrellas, yellow loungers and warm colours, it's surprisingly easy to imagine yourself somewhere along the French Riviera.
There are two pools, although neither is particularly large. Serious swimmers should probably look elsewhere, but for cooling off with a cocktail in hand, they're ideal. One even offers glimpses towards Orchard's skyline. The adjoining rooftop bar is another lovely spot to linger, especially around sunset when the vibe begins to shift from relaxed afternoon lounging into evening drinks.
One of Mama Shelter's greatest strengths is its location. Although technically just outside Orchard Road, the surrounding neighbourhood offers a far more local flavour than Singapore's usual shopping district. Directly across the road sits the original Killiney Kopitiam, where you can fuel up on kaya toast and kopi before heading out for the day. Nearby, you'll also find Jew Kit Hainanese Chicken Rice for one of Singapore's best-loved comfort foods, plus Killiney Curry Puff for a quick local snack. There's also a supermarket just down the road.
Less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel is Trifecta, Singapore's all-in-one venue for indoor skiing, snowboarding, surfing and skateboarding – an unexpectedly fun stop whether you're giving the sports a go or simply watching from the café. Continue walking and you'll soon reach 313@Somerset, Orchard Central and the rest of Orchard Road's famous shopping belt. Somerset MRT station is also around a 10-minute walk away from the hotel, making it easy to explore the rest of the city.
Mama Shelter doesn't try to compete with Singapore's grand luxury hotels – and that's precisely why it works. For guests who appreciate great design, a lively social setting and a boutique hotel that doesn't take itself too seriously, it's easily one of the city's most exciting new openings. It's stylish without the stuffiness, luxurious without the intimidation, and playful without sacrificing comfort. In a city known for polished five-star giants, Mama Shelter Singapore reminds us that sometimes the most memorable hotels are the ones with the biggest personalities.
