Mirazur, a Mediterranean restaurant located off the coast of Menton, France is now the best restaurant in the world. Helmed by Argentinian-Italian chef Mauro Colagreco, the restaurant highlights local French produce, some of which even come from its very own three-tiered garden steps away from the dining room.
"This year has been incredible for us," shares Colagreco. "It's the first time in 110 years that the Michelin guide has given three stars to a non-French chef in France, and the first time a French restaurant is number one on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list." He started Mirazur back in 2006 with just five people in the kitchen and a dream. Nine months later, he earned his first Michelin star and today, he runs a crew of 50 staff who are all celebrating this victory.
This year's top five restaurants include the highest new entry on the list, Noma, which changed its menu format and moved to a new location in Copenhagen last year. It's joined by Asador Etxebarri (Spain), Gaggan (Bangkok) and Geranium (Copenhagen). Gaggan was recently unseated from its number one spot on the Asia's 50 Best List by Singapore's very own Odette, a contemporary French restaurant by chef Julien Royer. Odette climbed an impressive 10 spots to number 18 from 28 on The World's 50 Best Restaurants list.
If you're wondering why the rankings for The World's 50 Best Restaurants and The Asia's 50 Best Restaurants are inconsistent, the answer lies in the voting panel. The World's 50 Best Restaurant academy is made up of 1040 voters from 26 world regions this year – and for the first time since the guide's inception in 2002, it features a gender-balanced ratio of chefs, food writers and well-travelled gourmands. It's also the first time the guide has launched its Best of the Best list, which features restaurants that have taken the first spot over the years. These restaurants – namely El Bulli, The French Laundry, The Fat Duck, Noma (in its first iteration), El Celler de Can Roca, Eleven Madison Park, Osteria Francescana and now, Mirazur – are no longer eligible for the annual ranking. This allows for new restaurants to join the list, as evidenced by 11 new entries on this year's list.
