There will be no fireworks this year at the New Year's Eve countdown celebration at Marina Bay. For the second consecutive year, fireworks will instead be set off at different heartland locations across Singapore, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) announced.

This move by the URA is to minimise crowds and the risk of Covid-19 transmission in the public. This is not the first time the Marina Bay New Year’s Eve countdown celebration will be marked without fireworks. Last year, fireworks were eliminated from the event due to the pandemic.

Instead of fireworks, two light shows will be carried out in Marina Bay this year. The first light display, Shine a Light, comprises a light-up of the Marina Bay skyline, with 60 light beams shining from The Promontory. For the whole month of December, different colours will be illuminated each week to spotlight a different cause.

The second display, Share the Moment, will showcase student artworks from various schools projected on the facades of three landmarks in Marina Bay - The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, ArtScience Museum and the Merlion. The artworks are centred around the theme of heartwarming moments inspired by the President’s Volunteerism & Philanthropy Awards 2021.

To up the ante even further, there will also be light installations and projections at the Marina Bay waterfront promenade. This includes a spectacular display of colours on a treetop canopy, a galaxy and an abstract clockface projection display.

There will also be a New Year's Eve music programme put together by Mediacorp, Let’s Celebrate 2022. Hosted by 987 DJs Sonia Chew and Joakim Gomez, the show will feature local stars from the music, dance and fashion community. It will incorporate scenes of the heartland fireworks and the Marina Bay light-up. You can also look forward to seeing various iconic landmarks in the music programme, including the Dragon Playground at Toa Payoh Lorong 6 and Jewel Changi Singapore.

Let’s Celebrate 2022 will be broadcast on Channel 5 and streamed online via meWATCH and Mediacorp Entertainment YouTube Channel.
