Just when you thought Legally Blonde couldn't get any pinker, it's having another pop culture moment. With Prime Video’s upcoming prequel Elle revisiting the high school years of everyone's favourite sorority queen, Singapore Repertory Theatre's (SRT) new staging of Legally Blonde – The Musical arrives at just the right time. Instead of retelling the 2001 Reese Witherspoon film beat for beat, the musical cranks everything up: bigger laughs, bolder choreography, infectious earworms and enough hot pink to make Barbie's Dreamhouse blush.
Running at the Esplanade Theatre until August 16, SRT's contemporary take on the Broadway hit follows fashion-loving Elle Woods as she enrols at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend Warner Huntington III, only to discover she's far smarter – and far more capable – than anyone gives her credit for. While the film leans into courtroom comedy, the musical thrives on pop concert energy, pairing big dance numbers and rapid-fire jokes with themes of self-belief and female solidarity that make Elle's story feel just as relevant in 2026.
Leading the charge is West End star Nathania Ong, who absolutely owns the role as Elle Woods. She nails the character's bubbly optimism without ever making her feel one-dimensional – a tricky balancing act she pulls off with razor-sharp comic timing and wonderfully expressive facial reactions. Then there's the voice. Whether she's rallying the Delta Nus in ‘Omigod You Guys’ or unleashing powerhouse vocals in ‘So Much Better’, Ong brings the kind of popstar energy that rivals any chart-topping diva.
The supporting cast is equally game. Celebrated theatre veteran Siti Khalijah is a scene-stealer as Paulette. Anyone expecting Jennifer Coolidge's instantly recognisable take on the lovable nail salon owner should know Khalijah isn't interested in mimicry. Instead, she brings her own warmth, vulnerability and comic charm to the role – and you'll leave wishing she were your best friend.
Then there’s Pierre Png, who makes a memorable return to the stage after a decade as Kyle, the improbably chiselled UPS deliveryman with more muscles than dialogue. Backed by hilariously sultry musical cues, every entrance earns giggles from both Paulette and the audience alike.
Of course, the loudest "awws" of the night belong to the show's four-legged stars. Real dogs take on the roles of Bruiser and Rufus, though we couldn't help wishing they had a little more stage time. When your canine cast is that charming, it's only fair to let them bask in the spotlight a bit longer.
Not every beat lands with the same impact. A handful of scenes briefly stall the momentum. For example, more could be done to lean further into Warner's smug, self-absorbed personality to make his inevitable downfall feel as satisfying as it should. The emotional moments also don't always hit as hard as the comedy, with the production clearly more interested in keeping the energy high than slowing down for introspection.
Still, those are minor quibbles in a musical that knows exactly what it wants to be. At two and a half hours, the show flies by thanks to its relentless pace and a cast that's clearly having as much fun as the audience. Whether you're revisiting Legally Blonde after countless rewatches of the film or discovering it for the first time, this is one version you shouldn't overthink. Embrace the camp, and remember to “bend and snap”.
