When Crazy Rich Asians was released back in 2018, it won a lot of hearts not only for its cast and rich characters, but also for being one of the most charming yet refreshing romantic comedies to grace the screens. Now, it is reported that there’s a spinoff in the works.

According to Deadline, the spinoff will spotlight Astrid Young Teo played by Gemma Chan in the original movie, and her romance with Charlie Wu, portrayed by Harry Shum Jr. The screenplay will be penned by Emmy nominated Barry producer and writer Jason Kim, alongside Nina Jacobson, Brad Simpson and John Penotti who will be producing the project.

Known to have impeccable fashion sense and great beauty, Astrid is the cousin of Nick Young (Henry Golding) and in Kevin Kwan’s books, Charlie Wu is her first love. They were previously engaged, but her parents didn’t approve of the relationship as they felt that Charlie wasn’t a suitable husband for her. In the Jon M. Chu directed movie, she learnt that her husband, Michael (Pierre Png), has a mistress and somehow reconnected with Charlie after they ran into each other at Nick and Rachel’s (Constance Wu) engagement party.

While the project claims to be in “early development,” it is important to note that the spinoff is separate from the upcoming Crazy Rich Asians sequel (penned by Amy Wang) which is still in development. Both the spinoff together with the Crazy Rich Asians sequel will be tied to Kwan’s second book in the trilogy, titled China Rich Girlfriend. The second book, covers Astrid and Charlie’s relationship as well as Rachel and Nick’s characters as they set on a trip to Shanghai to find Rachel’s birth father.

Keep your eyes peeled as we will be updating with more details about Crazy Rich Asians' spinoff starring Gemma and Harry including the official release date, cast, plot, trailer and more as soon as more details are available.
