In case you haven’t heard, the Singapore International Film Festival is back for its 36th edition, running from November 26 to December 7. When the news was first announced in early October, we were glad to hear that local voices would take centre stage. With the full line-up now revealed, it’s even more heartening to know that there will be a focus on female-driven voices, alongside a good handful of works by Singaporean talents.
Kicking off the festival is ‘Girl’, the award-winning film that marks Taiwanese actress Shu Qi’s debut in a directing role. The star herself will be present for an ‘In Conversation’ artiste talk hosted by Mediacorp’s Rebecca Lim, who’s serving as the festival’s ambassador for the second year running.
Other highlights as part of the 120-strong line-up include Sandbox – a chuckle-worthy mockumentary filled with action-packed stunts, featuring familiar faces like Benjamin Kheng, Nathan Hartono, Fauzi Azzhar and Oon Shu An. There’s also Cendol, directed by actor Qi Yuwu and starring Sharon Au, which is sure to tug on your heartstrings.
Discussions between SGIFF and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth are currently ongoing regarding the usage of SG Culture Pass credits for selected local films, so hopefully we’ll get to catch these and more for free. That said, general screenings are priced at a wallet-friendly $15, so regardless of method of payment, it’s still worth making time to watch and support these independent films – titles that you typically wouldn’t get exposed to at your regular neighbourhood cinema.
Early-bird tickets go on sale on October 27, while public tickets go on sale on October 31. Find SGIFF’s full schedule, check out some of the film trailers, and book your tickets here.
