Investments in public transport, urban planning and energy efficiency have helped drive Singapore’s progress

Singapore has climbed 10 places in this year’s Sustainable Development Report 2026, rising to #59 out of 193 countries, according to findings from the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).
The Sustainable Development Report 2026 (SDR) is an annual “report card” produced by the UN-backed Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), with economist Jeffrey Sachs as lead author. It tracks how countries are making global progress across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The SDGs are a set of global targets agreed by almost every country to improve lives by 2030, through ending poverty, improving healthcare and education, tackling climate change, and protecting nature.
Singapore’s improvement – up from #69 last year – puts us among the top improvers in the latest SDG Index. Our city scored 73.8 points, with a strong performance in education, industry, innovation, and infrastructure. We're also making moderate progress on goals related to gender equality, sustainability, and health, though major challenges remain in climate action, responsible consumption and production, and sustainable use of land and sea.
The global picture also isn’t very encouraging. Only about 16 per cent of the SDG targets worldwide are actually on track to be achieved by 2030, and most countries are still struggling to turn their plans into real, measurable results.
The biggest underperformers are goals tied to cities, the environment, food systems and peace – things like making cities more sustainable, protecting oceans and land, and strengthening justice and institutions. Dig a bit deeper, and the weak spots include sustainable farming, rising obesity, slow-moving government processes, limited press freedom, and corruption levels.
Even so, progress is still visible. Singapore has shown improvement, and the wider East and South Asia region has been the fastest mover since 2015, with many countries making gains across different development indicators. At the top end of the rankings, Europe continues to lead with speedy progression, along with Finland, Sweden and Denmark as the strongest performers globally.
