You can now play mahjong over dim sum and tea at a restaurant, as if you were in your aunty’s living room. On August 28, Yum Cha launched its weekly mahjong series, turning its Chinatown private room into a mahjong den and pairing four hours of tiles and table talk with dim sum and Chinese tea.

Mahjong may be enjoying a revival in the West, but Singapore has never really fallen out of love with it. What’s changing is the format, with younger crowds gravitating towards casual, social sessions – like Common Man Coffee Roasters’ recent mahjong social with Mahjong Lah.

Happening every Friday from 2pm to 6pm at its Trengganu Street flagship, Yum Cha's Mahjong Social Fridays is open to seasoned players and complete beginners alike. Come with your mahjong kakis or show up solo and get matched with players around your experience level – and if you have no idea what you're doing, Yum Cha's staff will teach you the ropes. Do note however, no money will be involved on the table, so it’s purely for the love of the game.

For $38 per person, you’ll get use of a private mahjong table, a six-piece dim sum set, which includes classics like siew mai and char siew pao, dessert, freshly brewed Chinese tea and a $10 dining voucher. Registration is required, and can be done here.

And Yum Cha has a few more new offerings up its sleeve. The 26-year-old homegrown institution will be taking its dim sum out of the restaurant, launching a new catering arm for homes, offices and celebrations across Singapore. Find out more here.
