Every culture has its 'celebration' food and nasi ambeng has long been a traditional Javanese dish eaten communal-style and usually served at festivities. Nasi ambeng is normally eaten by hand and the standard practice is to sit around the platter on a mat – which is why the communal element is a huge part of the dish.

They say that food unites everyone and it cannot be more true when it comes to nasi ambeng. A standard platter would be enough to feed four people – and more. At the centre of this impressive-looking dish is a mountain of rice (sometimes substituted with nasi kuning which is yellow rice), and portions of meat and vegetable dishes surround it. It is usually served with dishes like rendang, a chicken curry dish, sambal goreng, eggplant balado, bergedil (potato patty) and urap (a raw salad with spicy grated coconut). It takes a while to finish the mountain – which makes it more enjoyable when you have more friends sharing the platter.

In Singapore, nasi ambeng can be enjoyed at any time and by any amount of people. Yup, some of these places serve a mean solo ambeng platter which means no fighting over the best parts of the chicken. Not a bad thing actually.

Located at Golden Mile Food Centre, the family-run business keeps the menu simple with its offering of nasi ambeng sets – in different sizes. If you don't have a friend to share a huge plate with, you can order a single serving and still enjoy the signature sides like sambal goreng, rendang and paru (beef lung). The crowd favourite is the thin and crispy fried salted fish which adds texture and complements the other sides. The dishes are recipes passed down from the owner's late grandmother.

  • Yishun

There is some good you can find in Yishun. Like Coba Coba for one. The retro-looking eatery is known for its nasi ambeng which sees customers return from all over the island. But in these times when this may not be possible, Coba Coba has made it easy for fans to get the dish. Choose between two sets: beef rendang (from $27.90) or prawns with green chilli (from $38.90) as the main side dish. The crowd favourite dish here is the sambal sotong and you can also get a solo nasi ambeng set ($10.80) with this as the main dish.

When it comes to cooking for large groups, the team at Nasi Ambeng Asli Jurong West are quite the pros. For years, they have worked as caterers for events like weddings and large gatherings. Scaling things back a bit, the team is now busy with nasi ambeng platters which come in three sizes. Favourite side dishes include the gulai ayam (chicken curry), sambal goreng and sambal sorting. For $45, you get to enjoy a huge platter for four – but we reckon it can feed a lot more.

  • Geylang

If you want a quick fix, Gerai Nenek Obek is a popular spot in Geylang Serai Market. Though known for its nasi rawon (beef stew made with buah keluak), the nasi ambeng ($8) here is one of the cheapest in town and is generous with its side dishes too. The stall offers a lot of variety but the lemak cili padi is a clear favourite with the regulars. To make sure you can get your ambeng fix during these times, the eatery offers islandwide delivery.
