It shouldn't take Earth Day rolling around for us to give a hoot about the environment. The climate change emergency gets more urgent every year and reached a crescendo this year with the release of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's new report and a worldwide scientist-led climate change protest.

Clearly, something needs to be done. And it's going to take institutions, businesses, and individuals working together. This Earth Day, you can kickstart your eco-conscious journey by attending some thought-provoking panel discussions and learning new skills via sustainable workshops, or make a more immediate impact by volunteering your time at clean-ups. It sounds small, but we've got to start somewhere.

Earth Day Clean-Ups

Make an immediate and direct impact this Earth Day by taking part in the many city, coastal and ocean clean-ups happening in Singapore. You can start small – with a neighbourhood clean-up at Bishan-AMK park for example – or put your niche skills to good use with a clean-up in the seas around Singapore with The Submersibles. Each person in Singapore produces up to 800gm of trash a day, some of this finding its way to our waterways, parks and estates – so every helping hand counts.

When you've lived too long in an urban jungle, it's easy to lose lose sight of the natural environment that we should fight to protect. This Earth Day, tune back in to the wonders of nature through BBC Earth's special programming. For the month of April, it's bringing back a marathon of two key titles: venture into uncharted territory in Eden: Untamed Planet and peek into the secret, unseen lives of plants in The Green Planet. Ever wondered how these nature documentaries get their stunning footage? Then check out the bonus 1-hour special of The Green Planet: The Making Of to glean some filmmaking magic too.
